DEATH CLOUDS ON MT BALDY TUCSON’S LOST TRAGEDY

by Cathy Hufault

A keeper for your hearts and personal libraries

CRITICAL CLUES UNCOVRED IN 52-YEAR MYSTERY!

The is the first and only book writen about this Tucson boyhood tragedy. Arizonans have been waiting to learn the true story behind the mystery of this famous historical event. In the fall of 1958, Arizonans were caught up and mesmerized over a monumental 19-day search throughout the Santa Rita Mountains. Bold newspaper headlines all over region covered the largest search ever for missing persons in Arizona. Three young boy scouts from a group of six were lost in 3 to 7 feet of snow in a record breaking blizzard that came out of nowhere across the usually temperate Southern Arizona terrain. For days the authorites, as well as over 700 volunteers, searched. All watched and waited for word on the fate of the young ones. On the final day of the search, a determined Patagonia cowboy on horseback found their bodies in a puzzling location. No one at the time could figure out why they were there.

The mysteries behind the boy’s disapperance, where they were found, and how they spent their last hours were uncovered by the research in the writing of this book.

As an immediate result of this tragedy, a band of the devoted searchers formed a search and rescue group to ensure that something like this could never happen again. The group became known as the Southern Arizona Search and rescue Association and is the nationally recognized model for Search and Rescue Aswsociations throughout the United States.

Author Cathy Hufault, sister of a surviving scout, has written a meticulously researched, spellbind account of this historical event. This book relives the events, the gut-wrenching emotion, and the fascinating accounts of the survivors. It embraces the bravery and valor in the life-threatening episodes during the search by these ordinary people that did extraordinary things in giving their all to find these boys. The forward by Don Carson, the original award winning Arizona Daily newspaper reporter, and later professor of Journalism at the University of Arizona.
