Reginald Dwayne Betts: August 31, Thursday at 7:00 PM / The Poetry Center is proud to present Reginald Dwayne Betts, who will read from his work. After the reading, there will be a short Q&A and a book signing.  This event is sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Barbara Martinsons.

Open Mic:  September 2, Saturday at 11:30 AM / Poetry Center Docents host their monthly Open Mic event. The open mic will be round-robin style, which means each attendant will have the chance to share their own or a favorite poem. This event takes place in the Hillman Odeum.

Shop Talk: The Work of Jorie Graham: September 5, Tuesday at 6:00 PM / Shop Talks take a “round table” approach to scholarly investigation of poetic works, resulting in a collegial atmosphere; no advance knowledge of the poet or works discussed is required. Led by Farid Matuk.

Jorie Graham: September 7, Thursday at 7:00 PM / The Poetry Center is proud to present Jorie Graham, who will read from her work. After the reading, there will be a short Q&A and a book signing.

Literary Fiction Book Club – “The Association of Small Bombs” by Karen Mahajan: September 13, Wednesday at 5:00 PM / To participate in a Book Club conversation, just read the book and join us on the red couches in the lobby of the Poetry Center.

UA Prose Series: Joy Williams: September 14, Thursday at 7:00 PM / The UA Prose Series, curated by faculty of the Creative Writing Program at the UA, presents prose writers of distinction. The UA Poetry Center is proud to present Joy Williams,who will read from her work, followed by a short Q & A.

Main Library Poetry Circle: Brief Introduction to Poetry Forms: September 16, Saturday at 10:30 AM / Led by UA Poetry Center docents, Poetry Circle is a program to expand participants’ knowledge and appreciation of poetry. No prior poetry experience necessary. This event takes place at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library.

Gallery Talk: Giancarlo Huapaya: September 19, Tuesday at 6:00 PM / More a gallery performance, Giancarlo will be doing a 15-minute multimedia performance in Spanish titled “Es inútil negar las lesiones” (“It’s Useless to Deny the Lesions”). After, there will be time to meet him and ask questions about his exhibit, BirúPirúPerú, now on display.

Family Day: September 23, Saturday at 10:00 AM / Activities for the whole family. Creative writing workshops at 10:00 a.m., a breakfast concert featuring musician Gabrielle Pietrangelo, healthy food, coffee, begins at 11:00 a.m.

Oro Valley Poetry Circle: The Poetry of Adrienne Rich: September 28, Thursday at 2:00 PM / Led by UA Poetry Center docents, Poetry Circle is a program to expand participants’ knowledge and appreciation of poetry. No prior poetry experience necessary. This event takes place at the Oro Valley Public Library.

Aimee Nezhukamatathil: September 28, Thursday at 7:00 PM / The Poetry Center is proud to present Aimee Nezhukamatathil, who will read from her work. After the reading, there will be a short Q&A and a book signing.

Reminder: today is the last day to apply for one of our Classes & Workshops scholarships for Fall. General Registration for the Fall 2017 Poetry Center classes opens August 15.
Screening of Welcome to this House: Aug. 9, Wednesday at 5:30 / Welcome To This House is iconic director Barbara Hammer’s feature documentary film on the homes and loves of poet Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), about life in the shadows, and the anxiety of art making without full self-disclosure. This event is free and open to the public, and takes place at The Loft Cinema.

Main Library Poetry Circle:Haiku and  Other Japanese Poetry: Aug. 19, Saturday at 10:30 AM / Led by UA Poetry Center docents, Poetry Circle is a program to expand participants’ knowledge and appreciation of poetry. No prior poetry experience necessary. This event takes place at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library.

BirúPirúPerú: Collective Projects of Peruvian Visual PoetryAug. 21-Nov. 22/ This exhibit gathers 5 collective projects of Peruvian visual poetry that explore diverse poetic records and transit through various formats and languages. While they have been presented separately in cities around the globe, poet and publisher Giancarlo Huapaya has brought them together for the first time in this groundbreaking exhibition.

Screening of A Late Style of Fire: Aug. 23, Wednesday at 5:30 / Director Michele Poulos’ feature documentary on the life of poet Larry Levis.  The brilliant writing and troubled life of Californian Larry Levis came to an abrupt halt when he died at age 49. This event is free and open to the public, and takes place at The Loft Cinema.
