Odyssey Storytelling- Greyt Tales

Sunday August 26, 4 p.m. at Fluxx Studio, 414 E. 9th St.

Tickets: $20 if purchased online* by August 21 or $25 at the door
Odyssey Storytelling is happy to be teaming up with the Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption to present “Greyt Tales.” Five storytellers will share their personal greyhound experiences in the form of a story. The event also includes a merchant fair, wine tasting, appetizers and desserts.
“Greyt Tales” is greyhound and large-dog friendly. Guests are welcome to bring 50-pound or larger canine companions to the event. The ticket price includes sampling of two red wines and two white wines, with non-alcoholic options available. Appetizers include a combination of hot and cold items, fruit and cheese. Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging is providing a wide selection of desserts, prepared by a Le Cordon Bleu trained pastry chef. Beer, wine and soft drinks will also be available for purchase. Proceeds from sale of art and dog-related merchandise will also support Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption.
Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption a volunteer-run 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is dedicated to rehabilitating and re-homing retired racing greyhounds. It provides medical care, shelter, home training and socialization for recently retired greyhounds. The organization works to place greyhounds into adoptive homes.
Odyssey Storytelling is a project of StoryArts Group, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting and celebrating the art of storytelling. Odyssey Storytelling is collaborating with volunteers from Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption to teach participants about storytelling as a means of sharing personal narratives and experiences.

“HAPPY CAMPERS: THE GREAT OUTDOORS”

Fluxx Studio and Gallery, 416 E. 9th St., Tucson, $7

Stories that involve tents, Winnebagos, or cabins. The joy of first kisses and the sting of bug bites. Swimming holes. Scouts. Summer camp, band camp, church camp. The campfire where you roasted your weenie, squished your s’mores, were terrorized by ghost stories and all that kumbaya—we’re gonna camp it up. Get out your flashlights and sleeping bags!

Storytellers: Retired postal worker and current world traveler Linda Cross; Tucson writer Molly McCloy; avid cyclist and current KXCI-FM 91.3 deejay Martha Retallick; local musician and assistant program manager for Pima Community College Adult Education Jim Lipson, confused traveler Josh Wheeler, and Story Arts Group intern and creative writer Eliza Weeks.

We’ll feature six storytellers: U of A Lab Coordinator Ray Moody; artist and geologist John Wakefield; poet, writer and teacher Elizabeth Tilley; realtor Pat Archie; pastor and past program coordinator for Wingspan’s Southern Arizona Gender Alliance Erin Russ; and actor and construction supervisor Jon Bromfield. Storytellers will share their tales based on the theme:

Your tax dollars at work! So much red tape! Customers and employees can agree that someone is “right,” and sharing stories about our righteousness is cathartic. Who have you served? The themes are meant to be interpreted from a broad range of perspectives. If you are shy about telling a story, we give lots of support and helpful hints. Stories of childhood, school and politics. Schoolyard bullies, brats and school boards. Banned books and curriculum quarrels. Hopscotch and hand holding. Education legislation. Joys and pains of growing up. Cheating. The struggle to belong. The popular kids. Teaching to the test so No Child Left Behind. Sticks and stones may break my bones but stories will never hurt me.

Storytellers: Art teacher, Christina Culligan; Language Arts teacher, Kevin Lee Lopez; UA student, Cassy Crandall; inventor, Marko Hansen; TUSD Board candidate, Cam Juarez; and more! ASL Interpreting provided by Pima Community College Interpreter Training Program.
