The Influence of Teresita
By Grecia Ramirez
“Teresita Urrea was a revolutionary, journalist and powerful Yaqui healer during a time when Mexico was ruled by the oppressive Porfirio Diaz regime. Teresita “La Santa de Cabora” Urrea dedicated her life to healing and helping people on both sides of the US/Mexico border. She had such a tremendous impact on the people that many thousands would seek her advice, and/or to be healed. For example, she advised a group of insurgents uncertain of what to do about their land. She stated “God intended for you to have the lands, or He would not have given them to you.”
“Urrea was born in a ranch in Ocorini, Sinaloa, Mexico on October 15, 1872 or 1873. At the young age of sixteen, Teresa suffered from a serious illness that put her in a near-death coma. As a result, she suffered from a seris of epileptic attacks and claimed to have had spiritual visions directing her to cure the Native and Mexican people. This is how her healing work comenced. Once government officials found out about Teresita (“La Santa de Cabora)” and her massive following they began spying on her and like many curanderas during the Spanish Inquisition, she became a victim of violence and persecutin. Her followers were also prersecuted. In September of 1892, Diaz sent federal troops to attack Tomochi, Chihualua, Mexico a town that had a large Teresita following. Many innocent people were murdered. During that battle, 500 Yaqui revolutionaries, led by Crus Chavez too up arms to defend themselves against the federal troops. The insurgents were strong believers of Teresita and fought for their rights to practice their religious beliefs. This incident rersulted in Teresita being jailed without a hearing in Guaymas and was eventually exiled. ”
“Once exiled from Mexico, Teresita and her father fled to the United States where they were they were received with much joy by hundreds of followers.”
