Barbara McNichol Editorial- Word Trippers & Latest on “Editing Angles for Nonfiction Authors” blog

Among the most common Word Trippers heard and seen in
our culture, today’s offering pops out as one of my “favorites”
for its frequent misuse.

I’m sure you have your “favorites,” too. (My friends tell me
I’ve created a monster. Whenever they watch TV, they can
now point out Word Trippers in a heartbeat!)

Among, between – “Among” occurs with MORE THAN two
things or people; “between” relates ONLY to two things or
people. “Among the 128 members, 92 have email access.
Between Gmail and AOL, Gmail is the more popular choice.”

Barbara McNichol Editorial- 6 Ways of BE-ing to Better Your Writing

Barbara McNichol Editorial- 6 Ways of BE-ing to Better Your Writing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I love to deliver succinct suggestions to help authors hone their
writing skills. Daily Writing Tips inspired me to put together these
6 ways of BE-ing to better your writing.
BE Active
Use active (not passive) sentence structure whenever possible.
BE Concise
Write tight—no extraneous phrases or wobbly words.
BE Clear
Choose vivid verbs and accurate nouns; add adverbs and adjectives
sparingly.
BE Precise
Make sure the words match the meaning you intend.
BE Thorough
Write, revise, and revise again. (When you can’t read it one more
time, have an eagle-eyed editor give it a fresh look.)
BE Inspiring
Use figures of speech to help your readers visualize your message but
avoid clichés.
(For examples of figures of speech—similes, metaphors, chiasmus, and
more—cl ick here and scroll down.)
BE mindful of these tips; post the list on your monitor where it will
BE seen often.
Good writing demands correct punctuation. How frequently do you see
it messed up . . . often for lack of knowing what’s right?
When developing my writing workshops, I turned to Dee Dukehart of
Sandbox Communications who gave me permission to adapt her punctuation
guidelines. Thanks, Dee. We share them with you here.
Chiastic Quotations About Writing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Consciousness creates the writing; writing creates the
consciousness.”
– Neale Donald Walsh

“Love. Fall in love and stay in love. Write only what you love, and
love what you write. The key word is love. You have to get up in the
morning and write something you love, something to live for.”
– Ray Bradbury (Can you spot the chiasmus in this quotation?)

Please email me your favorite quotations about writing, words, and
books.

Bravo Corner – A Great Team Effort!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What does it take to “launch” a speaker/author with a whole new look
and message?
I worked with MacGraphics Services, Rhoades-Baum Strategic Marketing,
and Lauren Graphics who produced a brand, marketing materials,
corporate ID package, book design, CD packaging, and website launch
for speaker/author John Hall.
Said Karen Saunders of MacGraphics, “It was a massive undertaking,
bringing together the skills and talents of ten team members into a
five-month project.”
My part as editor of John’s book Do What You
Can seemed big, but it paled compared to the
entire effort. If you’re curious to see the whole
portfolio, go to http://macgraphics.net/blog/
P.S. I’ve had the honor of collaborating with
Karen Saunders and Patrice Rhoades-Baum since
we all worked in the corporate world 20+ years
ago. As a team, we still enjoy taking various parts
of the puzzle and putting them together, now in
the world of entrepreneurs.
7 Common Writing Mistakes Editors Keep Fixing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Do mistakes you commonly make prevent your writing from
being powerful—and saleable? Fix them before you hand over
your manuscript for editing!

I’ll present a dynamic teleclass on Thursday, February 16
(4 p.m. Eastern/ 1 p.m. Pacific) hosted by a National Speakers Association’s PEG group focused on writing and publishing.
(I chaired this Writers/Publishers PEG last year.)

The 50-minute teleclass addresses these seven writing
problems you might not easily recognize on your own—and
tells you how to correct them:

•Losing awareness of your reader’s experience.
•Addressing readers as a group rather than as a single
important person.
•Skimming the surface of a subject instead of going
in-depth.
•Arranging your paragraphs in an illogical or ineffective
order.
•Including weak verbs, extraneous phrases, clichés and
wobbly words.
•Using multi-word phrases when one active verb works
better.
•Failing to edit or rewrite sentences that ramble on, and
on, and on . . . .
Don’t miss this opportunity to challenge your writing! Learn the fixes that will sharpen, clarify, and embolden what you have to say.

Want to join in? Simply email me for the teleclass call-in
information.

Tucson Book Festival March 10-11 – Come One, Come All
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come celebrate books, authors, readers,
and literacy at the University of Arizona
mall in Tucson this March 10-11 at the
Tucson Book Festival. Last year’s event
attracted 100,000+ attendees. That says something about
the viability of books!
If you can’t attend, no worries. You can still become a Friend of the Festival through a small donation. The funds go to organizations that improve literacy for children, an investment in everyone’s future.
For all the juicy details, visit the Festival’s website. In fact, you’ll see my name among the list of 400+ authors because I’m p articipating in a panel about editing on Sunday morning.
Give literacy a boost through your support of this fabulous
festival dedicated to reading.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

If you want to shine in the spotlight this year, get prepared.
That’s exactly what Nancy Juetten’s dynamic five-part
“Broadcast Your Brilliance” webinar series helps you do.

Nancy’s hands-on program starting Feb. 8 (sign-up deadline
is Feb. 6) prepares you to create client-attracting bios and attention-grabbing story pitches and press releases. If you’re a coach, author, or speaker in the process of reinventing your business, consider signing up for this five-week program.

Take a moment to listen to Nancy’s webinar that explains all
the details. http://bit.ly/x5Akcd

You’ll find the info in the webinar itself worthwhile. Here’s what Kathy Henderson-Sturtz said about it: “Terrific
presentation. Itching to update my bio and create my
ready to go packets. You’ve made me realize how important
they can be to my continued success!”

Say bye-bye to that boring bio (a lso the name of Nancy’s
Bye-Bye Boring Bio book that I edited). And if you enroll
before Feb. 8, you’ll save hundreds of dollars. Here’s the
