The Australian/Vogel’s Literary Award
One of Australia’s most exciting awards for unpublished writing is now open for entries. The Australian/Vogel Literary Award offers a writer under the age of 35 a chance to see their novel published by Allen & Unwin, and share in a prize pool of $20,000.

The award is open to unpublished manuscripts of between 30,000 and 100,000 words. You have until Friday 1 June 2012 to enter.

Josephine Ulrick Prizes for Literature and Poetry
The Josephine Ulrick prizes for literature (a short story of 1,000 – 3,000 words) and poetry (up to 200 lines for a poem or suite of poems) is one of Australia’s most generous writing awards. Established in memory of Ulrick, a writer, poet and patron for the arts in South-East Queensland, the prize money in 2012 is worth $40,000.

Both the literature prize and the poetry prize will offer $10,000 to the best short story or poem, with a second prize of $5,000 for both categories and two commended prizes of $2,500 each, again for both categories.

Writing Australia Unpublished Manuscript Award
Writing Australia is the new, national body committed to promoting writing and literature around the country. And they’re wasting no time! They’ve just launched the Unpublished Manuscript Award, an incredible opportunity that will see the winner walk away with $10,000 plus a $2,000 mentorship.

The award is for an unpublished work of adult literary or genre fiction and is open to any writer in Australia. You have until Thursday 13 October 2011 to enter your manuscript.

Sydney Writers’ Centre- National Year of Reading 2012 Writing Competition

National Year of Reading
Next year will be the National Year of Reading and to celebrate, Writing Australia are holding a writing competition. Stories of up to 3,000 words will be accepted and prizes range from $3,000 for published authors, and $1,000 for unpublished authors. Winning stories will also be produced as recordings to help reach the 46% of Australians who struggle with literacy.

Byron Bay Writers’ Festival- Your chance to talk to publishers

Sydney Writers Centre- Express Media Offer Writing Grants Up To $5,000

Write in Your Face applications
Express Media is one of Australia’s most important organisations for young writers, with a series of programs promoting the work of writers under the age of 30. As part of their annual program they offer a series of grants for young writers using language in innovative ways – such as zines, e-zines, comics, multimedia, multi-artforms or cross-media works, websites, live performance and spoken word.

If you’re under 30, you can apply for a Write in Your Face grant of up to $5,000. You can also apply if you’re working with writers under 30.

Sydney Writers’ Centre- CAL Waverley Library Award for Literature

CAL Waverley Library Award for Literature
In 2011 the CAL Waverley Library Award for Literature, or ‘The Nib’, celebrates 10 years as one of Australia’s most important awards for research in literature. The award can be won by fiction or non-fiction, making this a unique opportunity for authors and researchers.

Books entered must be published between 1 July 2010 and 30 June 2011. While research is the main focus of the award, judges will also be looking for readability, literary merit and value to the community. One prize of $20,000 will be awarded.
