Contest Descriptions

FIRST 100 WORDS: Just like the hook line in a feature article needs to pull the reader into the story, so do the first 100 words of your novel. Put the words in the hook, cast us a page and reel us in!

BEST QUERY LETTER: The title says it all. In one page, tell us about your project and why we should sink those valuable print dollars into your book. This can be for a real project you’re working on, or something humorous — a letter you wish you could write to an agent/publisher. Include personal details on why you qualify to write this story, but remember, no name!

ARIZONA POEM: Here is your chance to be a cowboy poet. Describe what you like most/least about living/visiting in Az, or whatever it is that makes your pen break out in stanzas of joy about our wonderful state!

Winner will be notified prior to the conference that they are a “finalist” in the competition. You do not have to attend the conference to enter. You do not have to present to win. If you are a finalist, and are not attending the conference, you may attend the Saturday night banquet and awards presentation at a cost of $50, payable upon notification of finalist status.

PRIZES AWARDED IN EACH CATEGORY 1st Place- $100 * 2nd Place- $50 3rd Place- $25

FINALIST RIBBONS will be given out during conference registration with winners announced Saturday evening. All winning entries will be posted to the SSA web site after the conference. All entries should be original and unpublished.
