New Play Symposium for Theater Professionals and Aficionados
Form V.S. Content: Who’s Your Mama?

Friday, July 27: 2pm-5:00pm at Thick House
RSVP to rsvp@playwrightsfoundation.org
Live Streamed on #newplaytv 2pm PST (5pm EST)

Please join us for a lively conversation and showcase about theatrical aesthetics.
With Lauren Gunderson leading a conversation with Mark Jackson, Abi Basch and Members of kInDeRdEuTsCh pRoJeKtS, Laura Hope and JC Lee.

A reception will follow the symposium.

How and/or when does form take focus over content (and visa versa)? In what ways do they inform each other, and how does that impact the audience’s perception? What comes first and how do playwrights determine the governing logic of their plays when exploring newly charted territory in theatrical structure?

Through conversations and debates, we will address the elements of form that are wedded to content, and we will attempt to understand the enigma: “Which came first, the form or the content?”

Playwright Lauren Gunderson [LINK TO http://www.laurengunderson.com] (Exit, Pursued by Bear, Emilie) moderates this symposium and discusses her thoughts. Playwrights will also discuss their work in these terms as well as provide video presentations depicting their processes.

The Playwrights Foundation- See George Brant’s GROUNDED at the 2012 Bay Area Playwrights Festival

The Playwrights Foundation- See George Brant’s GROUNDED at the 2012 Bay Area Playwrights Festival

The coffee’s a-brewing, the copier’s a-cranking (rewrites), the studio’s a-buzzing: #BAPF 35 rehearsals are in full swing! While they are going at it, let’s zoom in on George Brant, and his play Grounded which will launch the 2012 Bay Area Playwrights Festival this Friday, July 20 at 8pm.

Winner of the 2012 Smith Prize, GROUNDED tells a captivating story of an F-16 fighter pilot who finds herself assigned to (wo)man a UAV Reaper over Afghanistan. Confronted with the challenge of fighting a war by day and being a wife and mother by night, her struggle to compartmentalize her existence becomes more and more difficult as her two realities become increasingly permeable…

“Perhaps it doesn’t come up the first rehearsal, or even the second. Perhaps you’ve distracted them with the research images… or the joke on page 12… But don’t kid yourself; you’ve written a one-person show, sooner or later the dreaded question will rear its head.” What question is that?

Read more about George’s thoughts on writing a one-person show and the question he dreads here on our blog. http://www.playwrightsfoundation.org
