Shame Every Rose: Images from Afghanistan

I’ll make a tattoo of my lover’s blood
and shame every rose in the green garden.
In collaboration with the Poetry Foundation, the Poetry Center is proud to bring Shame Every Rose: Images from Afghanistan to Tucson. This exhibit illuminates the landay, a clandestine oral folk poetry practiced by the Pashtun women who live near the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Meant to be recited or sung aloud, the landay is a couplet of 22 syllables. (You can learn more about landays in an article by Eliza Griswold available here.) The exhibit, on display at the Poetry Center through May 22, features photographs by Seamus Murphy illustrating life in Afghanistan and landays by Pashtun women. On Thursday, March 5, at 6:00 pm, we are pleased to host a presentation related to theShame Every Rose exhibit. Photographer Seamus Murphy and writer Eliza Griswold give a talk, and Murphy will screen his short film, Snake. Please join us after for a reception and a viewing of the exhibit. This event takes place at the Poetry Center and is free and open to the public. We thank our co-sponsors, the Poetry Foundation and the UA Center for Middle Eastern Studies, for making this event possible.
