The Playwrights Foundation- The 37 Annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival Introducting Don Nguyen

Introducing Don Nguyen, author of Sound

A few summers ago, I was at a writers retreat on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard. What I found were two surprising facts. First: much to my chagrin, there is no vineyard on Martha’s Vineyard. Second: in the mid-19th century, Martha’s Vineyard had the highest concentration of deaf population in the country. This served as the impetus for the start of a new play.”

In the paradisiacal setting of Martha’s Vineyard, Don Nguyen’s daring new play, SOUNDexplores love and identity as a deaf man and his hearing ex-wife come to a head over a cochlear implant for their daughter. Taking ASL onto the stage with spoken English translation, Nguyen plunges us into the world of the Deaf community, asking that both hearing and deaf audiences receieve the play firsthand and in translation. Featuring a cast of both deaf and hearing actors, Nguyen uses one island to meld two worlds into a singularly beautiful play.

Nguyen’s full-length plays include Red Flamboyant, The Man from Saigon, The Commencement of William Tan, and Three to Beam Up.  Don is a founding member of Mission to (dit)Mars, a Queens based theatre arts collective, a current member of the Ma-Yi Writers Lab, and is a frequent volunteer for the 52nd Street Project. He also keeps a hilarious blog dedicated to sad playwrights.
