Rosemary Zibart Author- FORCED JOURNEY: THE SAGA OF WERNER BERLINGER

FORCED JOURNEY: THE SAGA OF WERNER BERLINGER

by  Rosemary Zibart

A boy’s struggle to make a new life in the U.S. is featured in a story for young people.

In FORCED JOURNEY: THE SAGA OF WENER BERLINGER, a twelve-year-old Jewish boy must leave his family Nazi-controlled Germany in 1939 and struggles to make a new life for himself in the United States.  Werner’s journey takes him from Hamburg to New York City where he explores the gritty lower East Side, the posh Uptown, and lively Harlem.  On route he befriends Anika, an upper-class Jewish girl caught in the same predicament.

Wemer’s story parallels that of young people today who are fleeing unsafe or poverty-stricken homelands and seeking a new life in the United States.  Circumstances vary, but the sense of loss and fortitude to survive are much the same.

“It is a fact that approximately 1400 unaccompanied children came to the United States during the years 1934 to 1941.  These children from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia were fleeing the Nazi regime …  It is a challenging task, considering the range of ages and backgrounds of these young boys and girls, to distill their stories into the saga of Wener Berlinger, but Ms. Zibart has done so with empathy and understanding.  It is not only an interesting read but there were many times in the story when I felt that what happened to Wemer was what had happened to me.”  (Foreword to FORCED JOURNEY by Henry Frankel, President, 1000 Children – who came to the U.S. at age six.)

Rosmary Zibart is a former journalist and award-winning author and playwright.  FORCED JOURNEY is the second book in her series FAR AND AWAY, about young people dislocated and relocated during WWII.  Her first book, TRUE BRIT, about a girl who travels from war-torn London to bohemian Santa Fe, won the 2012 NM-AZ Book Award for Historical Fiction and a prestigious Nautilus Award for books that promote social change as they inspire readers for a better world.
