Using Health Resources
As health challenges change, the information needs of community health workers change too. Hesperian is undertaking a complete revision of  Where There Is No Doctor in order to ensure health workers have access to the most up to date information while maintaining the book’s narrative style, warm tone, and accessible layout.
The project coordinator for the New Where There Is No Doctor is Zena Herman (RPCV Ghana 2003-05), whose experience as a Peace Corps Volunteer motivates her commitment to the project: she is alive today because she used the book to diagnose her own appendicitis!
Alix Pora (RPCV Honduras, 2001-03) is helping organize the testing of new content in Spanish.
Today, Zena, Alix, and Hesperian are happy to announce the release of the new and expanded chapter on First Aid!
Alix explains why this First Aid content is so useful to those who need to set priorities for action in order to mount an effective emergency response:
“My previous first aid training was primarily focused on keeping a crisis under control until help could come but in rural regions, like where I worked in Honduras, help was not going to come, so I had to shift the focus on how to either prevent, or manage whatever could be managed with the resources available.”
This new chapter extends the reach of Where There is No Doctor’s First Aid information to cover:
  • Spinal injuries
  • Head wounds
  • Heart attack (CPR)
  • Burns
  • Poisonings and overdoses
  • Injuries from police weapons
  • Rape
  • Mental health emergencies
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • Allergic reactions
