Susan M. Ballard has become known as the story teller.  As one person stated, “When I read her words I feels like I am sitting in the room watching everything take place.”  Her way with words can take the reader to a time and place one can only imagine.  A time when Doc Holliday, Kate and Wyatt Earp learned the boundaries of love and what that love, deep, intense and reciprocated, can do to save a live.  Ballard’s historical fiction is rich with the flavor of early day Tombstone.

Her Doc Holliday series includes, BORROWED TIME, HOLLIDAY IN TOMBSTONE, DEATH TAKES A HOLLIDAY and now KATE.

Susan shares a small ranch in Pearce, Cochise County, Arizona with her husband, Brian.  She is a member of the Western Writers of America, The Society of Southwestern Authors and the Old Pearce Preservation Association.  Her work, both fiction and non-fiction, has been published in WILD WEST, OUT WEST, VOICE IN THE DESERT, WAR JOURNAL AND CHRONICLE OF THE OLD WEST.  She is a regular contributor to the TOMBSTONE TIMES.

GOOD BANDITS, WARRIOR WOMEN, AND REVOLUTIONARIES IN HISPANIC CULTURE

edited by Gary Francisco Keller

Copublished with the International Association of Inter-American Studies,  GOOD BANDITS, WARRIOR WOMEN, AND REVOLUTIONARIES IN HISPANIC CULTURE is the fruit of a groundbreaking conference that held in Phoenix in 2009.  Following an introduction by Gary Francisco Keller, the first section of this book contains articles dedicated to good, good-bad, and bad characters, both fictional and historical, across Hispanic culture, among them gay caballeros, the heroes and villains of “Zapata” Westerns, and Don Quixote.  The second section explores personages from popular culture and from novels set in the decades just before and during the Mexican Revolution of 1910, such as Demetrio Macias in Azuela’s LOS DE ABAJO; Angustias Farrera, the title character of the novel and film LA NEGRA ANGUSTIAS; Santa Teresa de Cabora and her villainous sister Jovita; Pancho Villa’s transformation from bandit/revolutionary to popular saint and hero of the people; and Jesusa Palancares, the fictionalized soldadera of Poniatowska’s HASTA NO VERTE JESUS MIO.
