Did you know? Cut to the chase

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “cut to the chase” and know that it means to get to the point, or keep it short. But have you ever wondered where it came from? Well, we have Hollywood to thank for this one.

The saying first appeared as a script direction in the 1929 novel, Hollywood Girl by J.P. McEvoy. He writes “Jannings escapes … cut to the chase”, meaning to literally cut the film, and go straight to the chase scene.

It seems it took a while for the saying to come into more general use as it didn’t appear again until the 1940s, where it popped up in an article about screenwriting. It included the advice “When in doubt, cut to the chase.” You’ll now see it used wherever a writer or speaker wants to make it clear they’re being blunt and to the point.

WEBPICK: The Write Practice
Practice, practice, practice. It’s what all great writers do, and what you should be doing too. At least, that’s what Joe Bunting and Liz Bureman, bloggers at The Write Practice, believe.

A mixture of practical tips, guest posts and writing prompts, The Write Practice is all about getting you writing, every day. There are also regular “Show Off” competitions, where you get to submit the results of your practice. Monthly winners are chosen to be published on The Write Practice. This is a great blog for writers and well worth checking out if you’re looking for some daily inspiration.

Abingdon Theatre Company- Presents John Marshall Jazz Quintet Sunday, August 12, 2012 at 7pm AND 9pm

The John Marshall Quintet will fill Abingdon Theatre with the sound of Jazz for one evening with two special benefit performances for Abingdon Theatre Company. Having learned his craft, with help from Ornette Coleman and Lonnie Hillyer, trumpeter John Marshall went on to work with a succession of big bands led by Buddy Rich, Mel Lewis, Lionel Hampton, Al Porcino, Gerry Mulligan and Dizzy Gillespie. In the late eighties John and pianist Tardo Hammer co-led the Bopera House, a standard-setting quintet which also featured tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama. Originally from New York, John moved to Europe in 1992 and became a member of the brass section and featured soloist with the West Deutscher Rundfunk Big Band, basedin Cologne, Germany, he is one of the brightest contemporary hard bop trumpet voices. John Marshall leads his own quintets in Europe and has put out seven CDs as a leadersince 1992, and many more as a sideman. He now returns to New York for the month of August to appear at Abingdon Theatre with an amazing assembled group of jazz musicians. http://www.marshallbop.com
