poetry by Alurista

selection and introduction by Rigoberto Gonzalez

XICANO DUENDE: A SELECTED ANTHOLOGY commemorates the polific career of one of Chicano literature’s most enduring poetic voices. The collection, which includes selections from Alurista’s latest work, TUNALUNA (Aztlan Libre Press, 2010), chronicles Alurista’s extensive writings in a voice that ranges from scathing, social and political criticism to erotic and provocative verse to whimsical wordplay. Through it all, Alurista reveals the struggle and history of his life and Chicano heritage in language that inflames and inspires.

Alurista was born in 1947 in Mexico City and emigrated to San Diego, California, when he was thirteen. He holds a PhD in Spanish literature from the University of California, San Diego. His work played a central role in the Chicano movement of the late 1960’s and 1970′ and continues to inspire new generations of artists and activists.
